With the movie looming, it's a popular question to ask. It sounds philosophical, it's chock full of Plato, and it's got that rhythmic double consonance goin' on.

But I've heard people ask it as if there's no good answer, rhetorically, like that "tree falls in the forest" Zen bananas.

In fact, there is an answer, and it comes from - who else - Michael Oakeshott. Who watches the guardians? The Watchmen? Those very heroes of that mighty graphic novel?
